Join Tonic Art Classes for this 1 day workshop in Mark-making in Oil Paint. Spend time creatively at Casein Barn immersed in a tranquil English garden creating energetic paintings of visually exciting marks. Eleanor May Watson will give clear demonstrations and set exercises to loosen and expand your vocabulary of mark-making using still lifes as a subject matter for expressive painting.

Suitable for all abilities, materials are included, bring a packed lunch for a garden picnic.

Course Outline:
- We will begin the day creating loose charcoal drawings to establish a composition rapidly using drawn gesture. Eleanor will demonstrate varying movement and tempo in mark-making, whether using your wrist or your whole arm to make a mark, moving quickly and slowly.

- Finish by choosing a composition to develop into paint.

- Eleanor will demonstrate and painters will paint along to create a vocabulary of marks as reference, including: loose paint vs thick impasto, using brushes, rags and palette knives,

- Eleanor will demonstrate starting a painting on canvas in larger sweeping gestural marks and developing on to a more realised painting by introducing a variety of marks.
- Clear demonstrations at the three key stages throughout the day. I like to focus on individual goals as much as possible and I will spend the remaining time speaking with painters one-to-one to give personal feedback.

What will I take away?
- A series of charcoal compositions on paper.
- A vocabulary of marks in oil paint on paper.
- A more fleshed out painting of varying gestural marks on canvas.

Your tutor:
Hello! my name is Eleanor May Watson, a contemporary visual artist based in Bidborough. Alongside my established art practice I have always taught, it is something I find hugely rewarding and I take it very seriously. I focus on creating sessions which are generous and stimulating and most importantly, welcoming. Painting in a group can be nerve-wracking and my aim is to facilitate each person to meet their creative goals. It is your time to be creative.

Who is this workshop for?
Anyone looking to spend time oil painting in a beautiful location, from beginners to more experienced painters. I focus on meeting each painters' goals during the workshop. Returning to the foundations of oil painting is interesting whatever stage you are at!

Recent testimonial:
“I have not stopped talking about the day, I loved it, it was a transformative experience for me! I have for many years felt that art is something I love and appreciate but not something that I can actually do!"
